Cotton satin–the affordable luxury

The cotton satin is a fabric characterized by its elegant brilliance, unique softness, and durability that makes it a preferable choice among other bedding sets. The material is luxury and soft to the touch, while its price range is lower compared to the silk. The cotton satin has many implementations, from fashion to home design, whereas the brilliancy and softness are its main distinguished characteristics.

Is cotton satin a real satin?

Although the cotton satin resembles satin to the touch, it’s not a real satin fabric. The difference comes from the types of threads used in the weaving process–cotton threads in case of cotton satin and silk ones for the production of a real satin fabric. The common between them is the weaving technique and the soft, shiny finish.

Mercerization or how does cotton satin fabric receive its brilliance?

The cotton satin begins its life journey from the cotton threads, which are mercerized to soften the fabric. This process involves the use of sodium hydroxide that adds the distinguished brilliance and softness of the fabric. The cotton satin threads are immersed in the sodium hydroxide solution, after which are rinsed out in neutralized substances. During the process the fabric is stretched, which creates the brilliant look. The cotton satin preserves its colors to a very high extend, while its specific brilliance is due to the mercerization process.

Weaving structure

The cotton satin fabric resembles the satin due to the same weaving structure–four threads over one (4/1). This leads to more threads being on the surface, resulting in a better light reflection, adding brilliance and luxury look to the fabric. Unlike the cotton satin and satin, the more common fabrics are weaved by using the one under one over technique, which diffuses the light, as the fabric has a wavy surface. The combination of satin weaving structure and mercerization creates the incredibly soft, sleek, and firm cotton satin fabric.

Number of threads

The cotton satin is a highest-end fabric with a minimum of 220 threads/m2. This figure is obtained by adding the number of vertical and the number of horizontal threads, e.g., 133 vertical x 88 horizontal = 220. The higher thread number is one of the basic indicators of the fabric quality.
